We recently represented an owner in the sale of a 1963 Thunderbird Convertible with a Dealer Installed Sports Roadster package. This third generation T-Bird is a true classic. Many feel that the 1963 T-Bird was the best looking version of the "Big Birds." The 1963 version looks like a missile that was fired from a rocket silo. Even the tail lights resemble rocket thrusters. Ford designer Bill Boyer played on the public's awareness of the 1963 Cuban Missile Crisis.

The 1963 Thunderbird displayed on this page is a "Dealer Option" installed Sports Roadster. This is a factory built convertible, not a true roadster. With Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels, a two-seater fiberglass Tonneau Cover and the fender emblem this is a glamorous and prestigious car. T-Bird afficianados know that a true Sports Roadster does not have fender skirts as there were no tabs built into the wheel wells for skirt attachment. This car was more expensive than a Cadillac. When new, this car had a base cost of $5,563, plus options. This particular car has most of the options available including factory installed "Selectaire" air conditioning, which was a very rare option for a car to have in 1963, especially on a convertible.

The previous title transfer occurred when the car was acquired from a Florida estate in April 2007 after the owner who was in the process of restoring the vehicle unexpectedly died. Representing the estate was "Cars of Yesterday," Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The purchase price at that time was $38,000. Although the vehicle had been largely restored, the new owner continued to make investments after the car was purchased and then brought to Chicago. The new owner completed the restoration by having the engine rebuilt and the wiring refurbished. Under the hood is the standard 390 cid V-8 with a Holley two barrel carburetor. This car delivers 300 hp and can crack 60 mph in eight seconds and reach a top speed of 120 mph. The 1963 version of this engine delivers 12% more torque than the previous year version. Notice the three sets of five "cast-chrome slash marks" on the doors which suggest "Total Power."

This Red Beauty has every available option which Ford offered for the T-Bird, however it does not have the Tri-Power "Six Pack" option. Appreciate the Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels. The clock works and the radio is original, but has been updated to be a stereo and also has been retro fitted to accommodate an iPod.

The body has no damage, dents or scrapes. The vehicle was repainted Rangoon Red. The original color of the car was Silver.

This vehicle is an absolute dream to drive. This car is one of the most attractive convertibles Ford has ever built. With the top down, the streamlined Tonneau makes the Sports Roadster sleek enough to echo the 1955 two seater Thunderbird. The Tonneau Cover gives this 4-Seater Bird the appearance of a sleek Two-Seater with a very long deck. Twin headrests are at the cover's forward edge and perfectly fit over the bucket seats to give a very futuristic look. The cover is very heavy and cumbersome requiring two people to install. The cover does not interfere with the convertible top operation. Because of the convertible top hydraulics in the trunk the cover does not stow in the trunk.

The interior of the vehicle was designed by Art Querfield and is an excercise in form and function. The design resembles an airplane cockpit. He reportedly spent more time on the T-Bird interior than on any other car in his 40 years at Ford.

A prominent center console split the cabin in two separate cockpits. Notice how the console sweeps forward to the left and right to meet the doors in perfect symmetry. The glove box was eliminated so as not to interfere with the interior design. A "Swing Away" Steering wheel aided access for entering and exiting into the cockpit. This car has tinted glass, power driver seat and power windows.

The car sold for $26,000 in September 2009 to a Florida buyer.
