Clubbers Finish 2006 Season
Ranked 6th in Illinois! |
Clubbers ~ Ranked 6th In State - Final Illinois State Rankings
The Chicago Clubbers (31 wins -13 losses) were ranked 6th in Illinois and 57th Nationally for the 2006 Summer Season, this according to USA Sports Rankings.com.
Congratulations and great job to all who participated.......and a very Big Thank You to Head Coach Ted Krga, Assistant Coach Mike Krga and all of our players for getting the 2006 Clubbers team to our best showing ever.
This was quite an accomplishment. A good season was had by all with several Tournament Championships, and a few more Runner-Up finishes than we would have liked. The 2006 Clubbers were one of the only travel teams in the entire nation to have played all of it's home games on a Division I college field......the beautiful Les Miller Field at the University of Illinois ~ Chicago.
The first win of the season was at UIC versus the Tinley Park Bulldogs. By mid-July the team was going on all cylinders with a 24-6 record.
Highlights for the 2006 season included playing in 5 wooden bat tournaments and getting the opportunity to play many outstanding teams in the CABA 15-U Ultimate World Series. The Clubbers went 10 games deep into the series, playing two games against Puerto Rico, three games versus Team Japan as well as playing qualifying state teams from Washington State, Connecticut, Ohio and Wisconsin.
This was a great experience for the entire Clubbers team and should distinguish you from many of your high school teammates.
Add up the number of high school games you played and then combine them with the Clubbers baseball season. Most Clubbers players will be able to talk about playing over 75 baseball games during their 2006 baseball season. This represents of a major league season.
For those players who were members of the 2006 Whitney Young Dolphins Sophomore baseball team, there is one additional thing you can also add to your list of accomplishments....You Won the 2006 City of Chicago CPS Sophomore Championship and YOU are now listed within the Chicago athletic record books!
The Clubbers will have a 16-U team in 2007........until then have a great school year, enjoy playing soccer, football or basketball and remember the importance of having fun and doing well academically............and most importantly.......be safe!
For those players who were using a Clubbers Loaner Uniform, please make arrangements to return your uniform to Mr. Rosa or to Mark Ormond.

Saturday, July 29 - Clubbers versus the Puerto Rico Astros. Clubbers were the Home Team. The Clubbers won 9-1. Carlito Ruiz was the Game MVP and the winning pitcher. Also contributing to the win were pitchers Mike Wachowiak and Joe Krasny.
JoJo Maldonado got the game Golden Glove vote and Joel Calixto was the game offensive MVP going 3 for 4 with 4 RBI's.
Saturday, July 29 - 2:00 pm - Clubbers played Washington Dow baseball at Lippold North Field. Clubbers were the Home Team. This game was played under brutally hot conditions with the end result being a dramatic fortune turning 2 out play in the top of the 7th Inning that resulted in a very discouraging loss. OUCH!!!!
Outstanding pitching performances from Jared Kraus and Gabe Henriques and some real clutch hitting and base running from speedster Alex Bolling. Sunday, July 30 - The Clubbers defeated the Kenosha Wisconsin Merchants 13-0 at Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake. The Clubbers were the Visiting Team. Joe Krasny threw a 5 inning perfect game and was the winning pitcher and was the Game co-MVP. Shortstop JoJo Maldonado was the other co-MVP. Maldonado hit two shock and awe 360 foot homeruns out of the park which accounted for 8 RBI's. Maldonado was also the Gold Glove winner for the game.
Monday, July 31 - 11:00 am Clubbers played the Solon, Ohio Diamond Boys and were the Home Team. The game was played at Frank Repp field at Veterans Acres which is positioned at the bottom of a deep ravine. The Clubbers played their hearts out coming back to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th Inning on a Pedro Rosa Double. However, throughout the game the Ohio team kept the pressure on and made the big plays. The Clubbers lost another heartbreaker 11-9. Monday, July 31 - 5:00 pm the Clubbers played the McHenry County Hurricanes. The Clubbers were the Visiting Team in a game played at Crystal Lake South High School. Despite an 11-1 lead the Clubbers could not hold on. There were several subsequent lead changes, but eventually the Clubbers ended up losing this one 20-14. This was a game played under extreme conditions, but despite that the outcome was unbelievable.
Wednesday, August 2- 8:00 am the Clubbers faced off against Team Japan at Lippold Park. This was a Silver Bracket game with a Double Elimination format. The Clubbers lost 11-9. We keep playing until we accumulate two losses.
Our game time tomorrow morning, August 3 is likely to be impacted by rain.
Thursday, August 3, - 8:00 am....SEVERE THUNDERSTORM ALERT.......Game time to be moved...new game time is 8:00 pm.
The Clubbers began their game versus Team Conneticut on Thursday evening at 11:00 pm. The game was scheduled to begin at 8:00 pm, but the Sparks Travelers and DuPage Diamondbacks game went 9 innings and lasted over 4 hours.
The Clubbers came to play and battled and got the win coming back late in the game. It was 1:30 am when the game ended and for most players it was after 3:00 am by the time they got back to Chicago for some quick shut eye.
Friday, August 4 - 9:30 am - Clubbers versus Puerto Rico. It was very late to bed, but it was only 3 hours later for 6:30 am wake up call for the drive back to Crystal Lake. The game was fortunately moved back from an 8:00 am start to a 9:30 am.
The Clubbers were in the 'lets play' mode and easily got the win versus the Puerto Rico Astros.
Please call 312-480-9955 for additional information.

The Clubbers hosted an exhibition event on Thursday July 27 at Les Miller Field at the University of Illinois - Chicago.
The World Baseball - Chicago event featured Team Japan. Team Japan swept all three of the games played against the three United States teams that participated in this event.
I am sure every Clubbers player will remember the experience of playing this well coached international team.

CABA Wooden Bat July Blowout Tournament ~ July 15-16, 2006
The Clubbers finished as the Runner-Up to the GABA Thunder at the HoChunk Nation Baseball Complex in Lynwood at the CABA July Blowout tournament. This was a wooden bat tournament. The 6-7 loss to GABA was disappointing, but hats off to the Thunder for a well played game.
The Clubbers won both of their Saturday games. Gabe Henriques pitched a NO Hitter versus the Suburban Stars in Game 1, winning 9-0.
The Clubbers faced the Domners Grove Longshots in Game 2, winning 9-5. Carlito Ruiz was the Winning pitcher and Ryan Williams got the Save. The game was tight with the Clubbers clinging to a one run lead until at the bottom of the fifth Inning the bats got going with two outs and Jo Jo Moldonado scored on a Single by Henriques and then Jason Ormond opened things up with a 2RBI (Ortiz and Henriques) Double deep to Center. In the bottom of the 6th Inning Maldonado crushed a two out, 3-RBI Triple to the corner in Left Field, scoring Ryan Williams, Joelh Calixto and Gabe Irazarry giving the Clubbers a substantial cushion.
On Sunday, Mike Wachowiak was the winning pitcher in a game played versus the Chicago Cobras.

CABA Monsters of The Midway Tournament ~ July 8-9, 2006
The Clubbers participated in the CABA Monsters of The Midway Tournament at the Ho Chunk Baseball Complex in Lynwood on July 8-9, 2006 going 2-1. The Clubbers opened the tournament on Saturday morning with an 8:00 am game versus the GABA Thunder. The wooden bats were blazing for both teams in the first three innings of Game 1. At the end of three innings of play it was chasing GABA - 10 runs to the Clubbers - 9 runs.
Pedro Rosa was the Winning pitcher holding the Thunder back by allowing NO runs for 4.1 Innings which allowed the Clubbers to tie the game in the bottom of the 5th Inning when Carlito Ruiz Scored off of a hit by the lead off hitter Gabe Henriques.
With time elapsed for regulation play, the tournament rules called for a tie breaker format to determine the winner. In the 6th Inning Gabe Izarrry scored the go ahead run on a fielders choice, off the bat of Uli Ortiz which was followed by Frank Gowder who scored the insurance run off of a single by Ryan Williams. Outstanding pitching by Rosa kept the Thunder back in the bottom of the 6th and got the Clubbers the Big Time Win.
Final Score ~ Clubbers 12-10 over the GABA Thunder. Winning pitcher Pedro Rosa; 4.1 Innings Pitched - No Runs allowed on 4 Hits; 5-K's and 3 - BB.
The Clubbers second tournament win was over the Homewood Hawks 8-6. Going into the 5th inning the Clubbers had what appeared to be a shutout when things got rocky and tight with some sloppy infield play.
Jason Ormond was the winning pitcher and Carlito Ruiz got the save. Gabe Henriquez went 3 for 4 at the plate and Gabe Izarray and Uli Ortiz went 2 for 4. Ortiz had a Big Time 3 RBI single in the second inning which put the Clubbers ahead 6-0.
Final Score ~ Clubbers 8-6 over Homewood. Winning pitcher Jason Ormond; 6.1 Innings Pitched - 3 Runs Allowed on 4 Hits and 3 Errors; 5 K's. Carlito Ruiz got the save 1.2 Innings pitched; 3 Runs allowed on 1 Hit and 2 Errors; 4 K's and 1 BB.

Governors Cup ~ Illinois State Tournament ~ Clubbers Finish 2nd
A true story about cheap sunglasses and cheap baseballs!
The Clubbers finished second to the Schaumburg Seminoles in the once 'prestigious' USSSA Governors Cup State Tournament played out at the Lumberyard in Bourbonnais. So it is congratulations to Joey Cecchi of the Semoinoles who was the winning pitcher and captured the 2006 Governors Cup State Crown. But for all of those teams that paid their $500 registration fee you can thank all of the organizers behind the yellow shirted bouncers at the Lumberyard gate for running another botched and rigged youth baseball tournament. But you cannot really blame them for having high security when the last two tournaments which involved the Schaumburg Seminoles the local militia was needed to be called out!
Playing at the Lumberyard is often like playing baseball in Bagdad, Iraq, so when the Clubbers did arrive at the Lumberyard on July 5th the only friendly greeters on this day of baseball were those yellow shirted bouncers wearing their bright yellow "SECURITY" emblazoned tee shirts........Where else do you see security enforcement at a youth baseball tournament, but at the Lumberyard? This is downstate Kankakee Illinois.....Where do they think they are?......on the streets of Chicago?
These bouncers are clearly not to be messed with and they are always conveniently unable to answer any questions about anything concerning the tournament. To no one's suprise there is never a Tournament Director at the Lumberyard to explain anything about anything! Although with Russ Gangler present (who is paid high $$ commissions $$ from running his Seminoles Tournaments at the Lumberyard), I guess one can assume that he was the one In-Charge of running things.
The Clubbers were victorious in the first game, a semi-final 11-7 win over the Orland Park Magic. The Orland Park Magic had been declared the # 8 seed based upon the Lumberyard's undisclosed and secret tournament seeding calculations. In the semi-final game there were two out of the park homeruns, one which was off of the bat of Carlos Ruiz. Kind of a suprise that the ball carried that far as all of the balls used at the Lumberyard Tournaments are nothing more than cheap practice balls.
Some of the balls were even noticed to be dud water logged balls that did not carry after being hit. That is what happens when it rains at the Lumberyard! The fields and the baseballs get put under water! For those uninformed baseball observers, this is another old Baseball Tournament Trick, to not use legitimate baseballs!
Oh Well........ any way you can get that win!
The Seminoles advanced to the 2006 Governors Cup Championship Game by defeating a team from Bloomington, who were determined to be the # 5 seed. In the Championship Game, the behind the plate umpire (a Michael Bolton look alike) was doing his best law and order enforcement routine. It is unclear of his certification (umpires do not wear any certifications at the Lumberyard), but what is known is that he did not call any breaking ball strikes. This long haired pony tail umpire, who had just days earlier been the friendliest and most affable of the guys at the Lumberyard had now been turned into the 'ENFORCER.' His in the field sidekick was a 'Barney Fife' type character who was wearing some cheap looking red mirror sunglasses. But regardless of how menacing these guys looked, they clearly articulated that they were NOT going to be messed with and were going to be VERY, VERY tough guys.
So after only the second batter of the game the Clubbers coaches were given a warning that they would be ejected if they questioned anything. Once again this was after the second batter, by a team with coaches who hardly say anything. Head Coach, Ted Krga needed to be settled down and then at the end of the inning Clubbers Team Manager Ormond went out on to the field to try to make amends with the umpires, but he was warned to also remain in the dugout. Fortunately it was player Jo Jo Moldonado who took control of the situation and said 'let's just play the game!' Oh well! .........So the game went on with the Clubbers coaches receiving their warnings not to approach or discuss any aspect of the game with the umpires. So it was.
This was all despite tournament rules that any dispute is to be discussed with the umpires and if unresolved to be handled by the Tournament Director who would be on hand to discuss. However, with ejections looming and no Tournament Director at the facility, the game was played with the umpires deciding to only call 'belt-high' fastballs as strikes. So after darkness was falling (and none of the lights being turned on) you had to tip your hat to the hard hitting Seminoles who won the Championship Game 13-5.
Without any breaking ball strikes being called and the corners of the plate not being seen by the umpire, it was a hitters festival and batting practice was all that this game eventually became. So once again congratulations to that once National Team, those hard hitting Schaumburg Seminoles who were led on by the wild and crazy rambunctious over the top cheering Russ Gangler, the enforcing law and order Head Coach at third base who did his best to incite and start an incident. The Clubbers did not bite and the game ended without anything more being said than a terse goodbye.
You could say this is nothing but sour grapes. Do so if you like, but no.......we were just happy to get our shot at the Seminoles despite the botched circumstances. Now we will just report it, as we saw it from having experienced our two consecutive weeks of Lumberyard Baseball Tournament participation.
It was to the economic benefit of the Lumberyard to declare the tournament over on July 3rd and not play it out as it costs more money for umpires, etc. So if any of you baseball observers want to send your comments about playing baseball in Bourbonnais, they will be soon be posted on our newest Clubber baseball blog and web page that will be coming soon, called ....."Behind the Hi Jinks in Bourbonnais."
The Winner of State for the 15-U group should have been based upon how the other age groups were handled with the Championship going to the Number # 1 seed after the tournament was called for rain......
1.) Winfield ~ 3 Wins ~ this is the team which should have been named the Tournament Champion, but Lumberyard Todd-foolery and trickery foiled this team from getting that deserved honor!
2.) Clubbers ~ 3 Wins
3.) Westlawn Wildcats ~ 3 Wins
4 .) Schaumburg Seminoles 2 ~ Wins ?????? WOW!! and they jump to being seeded above teams who played three games! One of the Wins was declared after the umpire called a balk to score the Winning Run! .......It's Seminoles Magic!
5.) Bloomington ~ 2 Wins - 1 Loss
6.) Berwyn Bulldogs ~ 2 Wins - 1 Loss
7.) Illiana Cardinals ~ 2 Wins 1 Loss
8.) Orland Park Magic ~ 2 Wins - 1 Loss
Stay tuned and come back often for the latest in 15-U baseball news!
Not ONE Lumberyard Communication With Any of the Participating Teams!!
HOW COME??? With NO explanation provided on either July 3 or July 4th, 2006 about the tournament it was eventually learned that all of the age groupings for the 2006 Governors Cup Tournament were cancelled; this was with the lone exception of the 15-U division which somehow had the Seminoles emerging as being the Number # 4 tournament seed. This was despite the Seminoles only having played two pool play games. WOW!.........USSSA Illinois Director, Todd Mencik.........Todd, Explain how exactly does this happen? We called you on what you claimed to be the facts and found out you were not dealing honestly with the tournament results. How come?
This was all after a July 3rd rain delay that resulted in most of the tournament field teams apparently withdrawing, this again is according to Lumberyard Tournament Director Todd Mencik who claims that most teams could not field a team on the July 4th date. Yeah right! That is not really plausible, since no calls were made to any of the participating teams. We checked out your story.......OK.....it was after all, your tournament to rig!
The Lumberyard consistently refuses to post any tournament scores or answer any questions about how this and many other tournaments were brought to a conclusion. How in the world can the Seminoles be the 4th seed in the tournament, is there any plausible explanation?
All of the games that were to have been played on July 4th were all mysteriously cancelled. This was despite a sunny and beautiful day when all of the games could have been played in the afternoon of July 3rd and definitely on the day of July 4th. It had previously been the announcement by Mencik at 9:02 am on the morning of July 3rd that the tournament was to be played out to its conclusion for all of the age groups on the 4th of July holiday.
Then mysteriously everything was cancelled WITHOUT NOTICE and there was no return of phone calls or e-mails to explain anything. Certainly a lot more $$profit$$ for the Lumberyard not to play anything out. But why play out the 15-U bracket and what is the logic for advancing the Seminoles from out of the ashes in a USSSA tournament? Could it be the $750 $$cash$$ prize that was awarded to the Winner of this USSSA Tournament event? Inquiring minds do want to know........or was this another rigged event.
In a phone conversation with Todd Mencik on the morning of July 5th he defensively explained that many teams complained because of the holiday scheduling and this was the reason he provided for why everything was canceled. Mencik could not provide a logical explanation for the Seminoles being seeded above other teams who played more games. But Mencik is the Tournament Director. He did acknowledge that Russ Gangler of the Seminoles receives a $$ hefty commission $$ for running tournaments at the Lumberyard.....NOW WHAT IS THAT TELLING YOU?..........Rumor has it (directly from Russ) is that the amount paid out to him was in excess of $25K. So what exactly is the amount paid to Gangler from either USSSA or the Lumberyard?
Well you can be sure with that kind of $$money$$ floating around that Gangler has a big part in how the umpires earn their keep and that was clearly evident on July 5 when the umpires refused to call strikes or answer questions and then threatened to eject all of the Clubbers coaches after only the 2nd batter in the top of the 1st Inning! Good job!
Oh WELL!! Live and Learn!!..............
Buyer Beware when making your next tournament selection decision.
Stay tuned for more on this tournament debacle. The 2006 Illinois State Tournament ~ Governors Cup!
July 6, 2006....It has now been determined that USSSA Tournament Director Todd Mencik had not been forthright with how the Governors Cup Tournament was being handled....... All of the age groups were canceled on July 3 and the championships were awarded based upon seeding for each of the divisions based on the games played out.
The exception to this was for the age 15-U age bracket, apparently to allow the Seminoles to be advanced under a rigged system to claim the Governors Cup Championship and the $$ CASH$$ PRIZE.
Way to go USSSA!
The team from Winfield should have been the legitimate 15-U Winner!!!! Que Sera, Sera!!!

CLUBBERS FINISH 2ND @ USSSA JUNE SLUGFEST
Several of the marquee players for the 15-U Chicago Clubbers (15-3) made their presence
known at the USSSA Slugfest tournament played in Bourbonnais at the Lumberyard this weekend, June 23-25, 2006.
Oznie Guillen stepped up with a big bat and JoJo Moldonado and Uli Ortiz made huge contributions. Lead off hitter, Gabe Henriques also came through with several clutch hits when they were really needed. The tournament winning pitchers were Frank Gowder, Ryan Williams, and Carlos Ruiz.
In the Championship Game, Oznie Guillen brought the game to a 1-1 tie in the top of the 7th Inning with a key 1-RBI hit. But in the bottom of the 7th Inning the Playmakers scored the go ahead run on a deep ball hit to center field. So the Clubbers finished as the runners up to the Indiana Playmakers, losing 2-1 in the bottom of the 7th Inning of the Championship game. Jason Ormond pitched 6 Innings in the Championship Game allowing 1 Run on 3 Hits; 5-K's and 3-BB for a 'No Decision.'
The Clubbers were the number one seed should have been awarded the home field; this is absolutely as stated for the rules of the tournament, however the umpire was absolutely unyielding and said he was unaware of this rule for the Championship Game. He insisted that the two teams flip for home field advantage. There was NO Tournament Director at the facility to get this matter clarified. The Clubbers lost the flip and lost their advantage for having been the home team.
Rule 1 for playing at the Lumberyard - The umpires used at the Lumberyard are not IHSA certified and are at most times confused and in the dark about knowing the most basic of the baseball rules. The Lumberyard umpires are all about getting the 1 hour 45 minute game underway and then getting the game over as expeditiously as possible.
It is absolutely important to always have a copy of the Lumberyard and USSSA Rules with you as the umpires will offer NO assistance for any rule interpretations and it is rare for there to be any Tournament Director available at the facility for any rules or game situations.
