Clubbers Basketball Win AAU New Years Tournament - January 8-9, 2005 - in Naperville
On Saturday January 8 and 9 the Clubbers participated in the Illinois Basketball Academy New Years Tournament in Naperville, IL. at IBA, located at 460 Industrial Drive (Route 59, just 1 mile West on North Aurora Road to Industrial Drive), Naperville, IL. The Clubbers WON the AAU 'New Years Challenge' basketball tournament.
The Clubbers 2005 basketball team, is comprised of many of the Clubbers players and is supplemented on the basketball court by Schaumburg Seminoles top baseball players Mike Olp and Robert Kennedy and Alex Monzon, a top basketball player from Russ Gangler's 2004 basketball travel team. The Clubbers team began its fall basketball practices and scrimmages in November under Russ Ganglers expert guidance. The hard work paid off as the Clubbers swept through the tournament winning 4 straight games in convincing fashion.
The starting lineup of Angelo Burrage, Frank Gowder, Mike Olp and Robert Kennedy gave the 1-2 punch to overwhelm the weekend competition, which included a top high school feeder team and one of the elite travel basketball programs in Northern Illinois, the Rising Stars. The tournament co-MVP's were Angelo Burrage and Frank Gowder who are two exceptionally gifted athletes and they both put on quite a show, displaying their exceptional basketball skills.
The Clubbers baseball/basketball program is all about teaching advanced skills of teamwork and getting our 'baseball players' who play basketball to be in better condition for the 2005 season. Russ Gangler coaches the Clubbers 2005 basketball team which is comprised of the Clubbers baseball players who wanted to experience what being coached by Russ Gangler is all about; that means learning advanced basketball fundamentals, learning teamwork, having a winning attitude and learning to win. Russ is an exceptional coach and motivator and does not stress winning over fundamentals and also knows that winning isn't everything. However, it sure is nice to Win; when it happens!
Additionally, Gangler demonstrated his coaching skill throughout by shuttling in players masterfully and got everyone to contribute to a great weekend of fun and team accomplishment. Congratulations to all of the players and to Russ Gangler. I also want to personally thank Russ for his involvement with our program as it means a lot to this group of very special and talented athletes. Each player on the team represents a different school and are the among the best players in their school program.
The Clubbers 2005 basketball team plays its games at the University of Illinois-Chicago and will be traveling to at least four additional tournaments including a big AAU event in Wisconsin at the end of February. The Clubbers who are now 5-0 would enjoy playing a game against any 14-U teams (8th grade) who are interested in getting a game in before the baseball season takes hold. Contact either Mark Ormond 312-922-9556 or Russ Gangler to schedule a game vs the Clubbers. will
Please return the Clubber White Uniforms so they can be cleaned for next seson; all players will be re-sized with the Red/Black Clubber Uniforms for the Spring season.

Clubber winter basketball is underway!
On Friday night, December 3, the Clubbers were led in their opening win at IIT by Frank Gowder who had a double double scoring 22 points and collecting 15 rebounds. Gowder was all over the court and was impressive on both sides of the game. The Clubbers also had a solid game from star forward Dai Bowden who scored 10 points despite a recent ankle injury; Bowden collected 6 rebounds and had 2 steals.
The outside game was working for Jason Ormond who scored the first bucket of the game putting the Clubbers in front when he connected on the first of his two 3 point bombs; scoring 6 points for the night. Starting point guard Robert Kennedy ran the offense very effectively dishing out 5 assists and also got in the long range shooting by hitting a 3 pointer and scoring 7 points for the game. Great defense was played by Jon Dorsey and Jack Cinomann which led to many turnovers and Clubber fast breaks.
Clubber Head Basketball Coach Russ Gangler said, "this was a great way to start the season and we have two great months of basketball ahead of us." The team will continue to practice hard as they prepare for participation in three upcoming AAU tournaments this winter and stay tuned for soon to be annnounced dates for games versus former Chicago Bulls Stacy King's Long Grove basketball program and against the Lisle Lions High School feeder team. Both teams will be playing the Clubbers in upcoming games at Illinois Institute of Technology Keating Field House located at 31st and State Street. Stay tuned for more details.
The basketball tournaments the Clubbers are scheduled to participate in are the Holiday Classic in December, and the New Years Challenge in January. These tournaments are AAU sanctioned and feature a running clock with 20 minute quarters and a 5 game guarantee. Speed and conditioning training will be a big benefit for those players who participate.
